Protected Characteristics
The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation because of the protected characteristics that we all have.
Under the Equality Act, there are nine protected characteristics:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Race – including colour, nationality, ethnicity or racial origin
- Religion or belief
- Marriage or civil partnership
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
- Pregnancy or maternity
No form of discrimination is tolerated at Thelwall Junior School and our staff and pupils show respect for those who share the protected characteristics.
The nine protected characteristics are actively promoted in an age appropriate way in school through:
- Our school vision and ethos statements, SIP and SEF
- Our school values
- Our school behaviour policy
- Conscious role modelling by all adults in the school community
- Active engagement and communication with parents and carers
- Assemblies (class and whole school)
- Picture News
- Discussions within curriculum subjects
- Promoting articulation by building appropriate language and a coherent vocabulary
- Personal, social, health and economic education lessons
- Religious Education lessons
- Relationship and sex Education lessons
- Pupil voice
- Educational visits
- School Council
- Extra-curricular activities, after school clubs, charity work and work within the local community, including links with Thelwall Infant School and local High Schools
